150: Five Day Passive House Trades Course

This five-day course is being offered through BCIT and provides the knowledge and practical skills building contractors need to build to the world’s most efficient energy standard. This course focuses on building enclosure optimization, and provides a foundation in passive house principles, while stressing the importance of construction fundamentals and proper sequencing. Participants will learn building techniques that minimize thermal bridging, maximize airtightness, while using a variety of materials. An introduction to common passive house mechanical systems will be provided, including heat and energy recovery ventilators, heat pumps, and solar thermal. The course days take place in a lab/classroom and will include a blower door test.

Certified Passive House Tradesperson Exam

There is also the option of writing the Certified Passive House Tradesperson exam (requires separate registration).

Course Conductors:

Sandra Rohler is a PHI certified Passive House Designer and PHI Passive House Tradesperson. Holding an architectural degree from Peter Behrens School of Architecture, Germany and a degree in carpentry/furniture making and window manufacturing, Sandra worked on the design and construction of numerous low-energy and passive house certified buildings in Germany before relocating to Vancouver, BC in 2005. Her current practice includes institutional + multi-residential PH projects, a multi-residential PH prototype for Metro Vancouver, a 6-storey vertical urban farm, educating and promoting the Passive House standard as guest lecturer at University of British Columbia (UBC), British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) and Canadian Green Building Council (CaGBC) administered courses.

Marcel Studer is a principal of Econ Group Ltd, a Vancouver based construction firm with a strong focus on modern, high quality architecture designed to the International Passive House Standard. Holding a Masters Degree in Architecture from the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich (Switzerland), Marcel has lived and worked in Canada for the last 15 years. Marcel completed the Passive House Design course in 2011 and has been involved in multiple PH projects in and around Vancouver as a project manager, consultant or designer.
